RCMP Handle Case Informally - No Charges

Door to door canvasser identified
Money goes to Society

The female who was reportedly collecting donations on behalf of the BC Open Heart Society has been identified.

Following up on TIPS provided by the public, on Tuesday March 15th, the Nanaimo RCMP attended the woman's central Nanaimo home.  She still had the money she had collected and it was turned over voluntarily to the investigator. The investigating officer, after considering all the factors involved, elected to deal with the matter informally. Also, realizing the money had initially been donated to the BC Open Heart Society, the officer has since forwarded the money to their Society. The female was also warned that any further reports could result in criminal charges. The investigation is now concluded.

March is Fraud awareness month. The public is asked to remain vigilant when individuals come to your door asking for donations. Regardless of the age or cause, ask questions, examine the ID tag and if you have any concerns or questions, do not give them any money. Call the agency directly to confirm it is legitimate and verify they have canvassers in your community. If fraudulent, then call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and report it.
